Matheran is a most coolest Hill Station situated in Karjat. Matheran is the smallest hill station of India. it is at height of 2625 Feet above sea level. The name Matheran means ‘Forest on Top’
Matheran is located around 95 km from Mumbai, 125 km from Pune very good picnic spot for one day picnic also.
Matheran as a Hill Station around pune was discovered by a British in 1850.
Matheran is an eco-sensitive region, declared by the Ministry of Environment and Forest. It is one of the few places in the world where vehicles are not allowed, which makes the place different from others. Matheran takes you over a hundred years back in time when there were no vehicles. Because of vehicles being banned in Matheran, the place is quite peaceful despite the thousands of lakhs coming to visit throughout the year. it is as per government rule.
There are around 40 designated look-out points in Matheran, including the Panorma Point that provides a 360 degree view of the surrounding area and also the Neral town. From this point, the view of sunset and sunrise is excellent. The Louisa Point offers crystal clear view of the Prabal Fort. The other points are the One Tree Hill Point, Hart Point, Monkey Point, Porcupine Point, Rambgh Point, and many more.
It is a steep and narrow road but well surfaced for the most part. When you reach the car park find a parking space in the designated area and park your car. The parking entrance fees and daily parking fees need to be paid here.
No vehicles are allowed beyond this point. Matheran center is a 40-minute walk from Dasturi Car Park. Before you enter the limits of Matheran, Matheran Municipal council charges a fees of Rs 25 per adult and Rs 10 for children.
Parking facilities are available at Dasturi Naka of Matheran. From this point you have to trek on foot or on horseback or by hand pulled rickshaws, as motor vehicles are prohibited within the hill-station area. During rainy season Train Services are not regular. Taxi takes about 20 minutes to reach Dasturi Naka from Neral. To go around Matheran, one has to walk or avail the services of horses or handcart. A taxi from Neral to Matheran takes about half an hour to reach. Taxis stop about 2.7 km from the hill station.
Horses can be hired for around Rs.120 per hour for trots around to the view points.
